Networking - it works!

Here's a statistic that might amaze you: At least 50 per cent (and possibly as many as 80 per cent) of job vacancies are never advertised outside the company. Obviously, the hidden job market holds possibly the greatest potential for the new immigrant. The question is, how does one tap into this market?

The answer, quite simply, is networking. This catch-all term means keeping your eyes and ears open, and spreading the word around that you are in the market for a job.

To network successfully, it helps to get around a lot - joining a club or association, regularly staying in touch with friends, striking up conversations with people you meet often.

It is not uncommon for job-seekers to hear of vacancies while talking to neighbours in a building's laundry room or gym, or while riding in a bus or train.

Make it a point to speak to people you know (and people they know) to inquire about openings at the companies where they work. You needn't be ashamed of admitting to being ‘between jobs' - almost everyone in Canada, immigrant or not, has been through this and will appreciate your predicament.

Here's wishing you a successful job hunt!
