Career Fairs

Job fairs and Career Expos are becoming increasingly popular with employers. These are usually organised by recruitment firms and aim to match employers with the right candidate for a job. It is an excellent opportunity for a new immigrant to meet the people who make hiring decisions for their firms and should be treated with the same importance you would give to a job interview.

These career exhibitions are usually advertised a week or two before they are to take place, which provides you a chance to find out more about the firms which will be represented at the fair. Call the organisers and find out which of the participating companies might have openings in your line of work. Use the library or the Internet to obtain more information about these firms.

Dress for the fair as you would for an interview. Carry more resumes than you think you might need. Plan your time well, focusing on meeting people from the companies where you feel your skills will be most useful. Carry a pen and notepad so you can take notes. Prepare a list of relevant questions you might like answered. If you see a particular firm as a prospective employer, ask the representative for his or her business card. If they don't have any available, write down their name, making sure you have spelt it correctly.

Finally, if you are genuinely interested in a position, make sure you convey that interest and inquire what you need to do to arrange a second interview or test.

Even if the positions available aren't what you are looking for, ask if you can have your resume put on file -- six months down the road, the company might have a vacancy that's just perfect for you!
