Newspaper Classifieds

If you happen to move to a major city like Toronto or Vancouver, you will find the newspapers packed with literally thousands of career opportunities each week. Even if you aren't a "newspaper person", the Help Wanted classifieds alone will make a subscription worthwhile. If cost really is a factor, you might wish to pick up the newspaper only on days when the Careers special is published. For example the Toronto Star, Canada's biggest-selling newspaper, is almost bursting at the seams with job classifieds every Tuesday and Saturday.

Apart from the mainline papers, you might also like to scan through the weekly Employment News, available free, or trade publications in your field of expertise.
Most employers ask that you fax your resume rather than mail it, so ensure you have ready access to a fax machine and also be careful to set your resume in a type that can be easily read.

If the experience of immigrants interviewed for this guide is anything to go by, you should expect a call within a week or two after sending in your resume. If you haven't heard anything by then, chances are that you have failed to make the cut. Few employers bother with replying to applicants who haven't been considered for a post.

Assuming you do get a call, you might then have to go through a phone interview, before being called in for a face-to-face meeting.
