Taxis

Immigrants who are used to flagging down taxis on the road will have to get used to a slightly different system here. It is rare to find an empty cab cruising the roads in search of customers (though you can flag it down if you see one). In Canada, you need to phone for a taxi. Check the Yellow Pages for your city for a list of taxi companies in your area and keep the numbers handy for whenever you need them.

Travelling by taxi is expensive anywhere in the world; it's even more so in Canada where fares tend to be on the high side. Fares vary by city, but on average expect to pay about $2.25 from the moment you step in and about $1.50 for each kilometre. Factor in the immense distances for most travel and waiting time in regular daytime traffic and you will discover that taxis are a rather expensive proposition.

Tips are expected, about 15 per cent of the bill is standard. Many taxis accept credit card payment, though you should check with the taxi company when you call in for your ride. Taxi drivers will give you a receipt if requested.
