What to expect at the airport Before
flying out to Canada, ensure you have all your paperwork ready –
Immigration documents, lists of accompanying goods and those to follow.
Keep these in your carry-on bag, not the checked-in luggage (it’s been
known to happen!).
No matter which city you’re flying to,
the procedure you will go through is essentially the same. Your papers
will be checked at Immigration and then you will be ushered to a
separate room.
Here another Immigration officer will check that all
your documentation is in order. You will be asked about the funds you
are bringing in with you and how much you intend to transfer in all. As
mentioned earlier, you will be told to deposit anywhere between $10,000
and $20,000 into a Canadian bank account within 30 days.
Your
papers will then be stamped and stapled to your passport. This is your
official document to freely make trips from and to your new country.
There
are dozens of brochures, pamphlets and other literature that you can
pick up here, most of it at no cost. The topics range from lifestyles
in Canada to lists of community organisations. An attendant will help
you select literature that might be useful to you.
Now it’s on to
picking up your suitcases and then to Customs. It’s here that you will
have to hand over the lists we mentioned earlier. You will be required
to pass on two copies of the ‘Goods to Follow’ list (one is sent to the
port customs authorities) and one copy each of the ‘Accompanying Goods’
and ‘Jewellery’ lists, with pictures. You should now have one copy of
each of the three lists, which you can have stamped by the Customs
official.
Expect the entire procedure at the airport to take between one to one-and-a-half hour. All you now need is to leave the airport and get your ride to your home or hotel. Welcome to Canada!
