Eyes on budget for landing fee plan Print E-mail
By Ethan Caleb   »  The 2006 federal Canadian budget, in which details of the reduction of the landing fee will be unveiled, will be released today (May 2, 2006). This site will bring you updated information as it becomes available.

As reported earlier on this site, Citizenship and Immigration Minister Monte Solberg has already revealed that the government will follow through on its election pledge of halving the $975 Right of Permanent Residence fee - the official term for the landing fee - which all new immigrants must pay.

Solberg did not reveal a timeline for the reduction, merely stating that details would have to wait until the budget.

Today's budget allows enough time for legislators to approve it before Parliament breaks for summer recess.

Thousands of prospective immigrants are believed to be biding their time in paying this fee, or even stopping short of putting in their applications, until the landing fee announcement. It is not known if the fee cut - if it makes it into the budget - will apply only to new applications or those whose papers are already being processed.
