Very often, you will see ads in the paper or a notice on a telephone pole explaining how you can open a home-based business that will generate huge dollars.

The scam: The hitch is you must send in money (anywhere between $29.99 to $199.99) to receive a "start-up" package. This can have three results, none of them positive:

  • a request will arrive for more money;
  • instructions will arrive on how you can place similar ads and notices, thus replicating this scheme; or
  • nothing will arrive and your money will go missing.

Advice: If the business they're promoting really did generate megabucks, it wouldn't be advertised in the paper or glued to a telephone pole.
