More people in Canada are opting to become their own bosses, with self-employment rising by 3.6% in 2005. This equates to about 88,000 newly self-employed people last year.  

About one-fifth of this increase was associated with construction and real estate, the Statistics Canada figures show.



The number of private sector employees increased by 92,000 (+0.9%) in 2005, with strong increases in educational services followed by transportation.

Overall in 2005, employment among adult men was up by 131,000, or 1.8% over the previous year. Nearly all of the gains in 2005 were in full-time employment.

Among adult women, employment in 2005 was up by 74,000 (+1.2%), all of the increase in full-time jobs.

Employment among youths rose by 28,000 (+1.1%) in 2005.
